7 Design Decisions for Manufacturable Resin Figurines

A visually attractive character is not automatically ready for casting. Thin parts, deep undercuts, unstable poses and inaccessible paint areas can increase breakage, tooling complexity and inconsistency.

At TUOYUAN, we review the following seven decisions before a custom resin figurine enters tooling.

1. Set the Real Product Size

Overall height alone is not enough. Confirm width, depth, base footprint and the thickness of small features. Size affects weight, mold structure, hand painting, packaging and freight.

If the product must fit a shelf, gift box or display unit, provide those limits at the beginning.

2. Strengthen Thin Projections

Fingers, horns, staffs, tails and narrow connections can be fragile. We may recommend increasing thickness, shortening an unsupported projection or changing its connection point while preserving the visual intent.

The strongest solution is usually designed into the model—not added after a breakage problem appears.

3. Separate Parts Strategically

A sculpture may be divided into several castable components to improve mold release, surface detail and painting access. Part separation can also protect fragile accessories during shipment.

Joints should be placed where seams can be controlled or hidden by natural design boundaries.

4. Plan Balance and the Base

The center of gravity must remain within the support area. A large head, extended arm or heavy accessory can make a figurine unstable even if the digital model looks correct.

Base dimensions, internal weight distribution and final assembly should be evaluated during sample development.

5. Design for Paint Access

Deep recesses and overlapping components may be difficult to paint consistently. Some parts are more efficiently painted before assembly. Color boundaries, facial details, gradients and metallic effects should be identified in the approved sample standard.

6. Match Texture to Scale

Very fine digital textures may disappear during printing, mold-making, casting, primer and paint. Enlarging or simplifying selected textures can create a stronger final result at the actual product size.

Always review a model at production scale rather than only as a magnified screen image.

7. Develop Packaging with the Product

Packaging should support strong areas and protect weak projections. A late packaging decision may force a larger box or place pressure on fragile features. Product orientation, removable parts and insert design should be considered before the final sample is approved.

A Better Approval Sequence

Use this order:

  1. Approve concept and dimensions.
  2. Review manufacturability and part separation.
  3. Approve the 3D model or master sculpture.
  4. Review an unpainted casting for structure.
  5. Approve the finished sample for color and assembly.
  6. Approve the packaging configuration.
  7. Release mass production against the golden sample.

What to Send for a DFM Review

Provide front, side and back views; target dimensions; intended finish; quantity; packaging goal; destination; and any features that cannot be changed. We will distinguish fixed design requirements from areas where engineering adjustments are acceptable.

Thoughtful DFM does not remove creativity. It helps translate the artwork into a product that can be cast, finished, packed and reordered consistently.
