Custom Polyresin Products: A Buyer’s Guide

Custom polyresin products are often chosen when a project depends on sculpted form, surface texture, dimensional storytelling or hand-painted detail. They can be developed as figurines, religious statues, snow globe bases, dimensional magnets, miniature scenes, awards and coordinated souvenir collections.

But a polyresin project is not quoted accurately from a product name alone. Size, weight, pose, base structure, number of separate parts, painting complexity, packaging and destination market can all change the manufacturing route and cost.

This guide explains how custom polyresin products are made, how buyers can choose an appropriate development route, what information is needed before quotation, how lead time and packaging are planned, and how MOQ, compliance and multi-material collections should be evaluated.

1. How Are Custom Polyresin Products Made?

The exact process varies by product, but a typical custom polyresin project follows the stages below.

1. Project Brief and Reference Review

The first step is to define the product rather than immediately make a mold. We review the intended product type, size, quantity, target market, use, delivery requirement and available artwork or reference images.

For character products, clear front, side and detail references help us understand proportion, expression, clothing and accessories. For landmarks or narrative scenes, the viewing angle and the relationship between different elements must also be defined.

2. Sculpting or 3D Model Development

The approved concept is translated into a physical sculpture or digital 3D model. This stage establishes the pose, proportions, surface detail, part separation and base structure.

The model is not only an artistic preview. It also helps identify production concerns such as thin projections, unstable poses, difficult undercuts, hidden painting areas and components that may need separate molding and assembly.

3. Master Model Review

Before mold making, the master model is reviewed for shape, scale, balance, key details and assembly points. Buyers should treat this as an approval gate. Changes made after mold preparation may require additional tooling work.

A 3D-printed or unpainted master confirms form, but it does not fully confirm the final material, surface finish, paint appearance or production shrinkage. These items still need to be checked on a finished sample.

4. Mold Making

Molds are prepared from the approved master model. Mold layout depends on the product shape, number of parts, undercuts and expected production quantity.

Complex figures may be divided into several cast parts. This can improve molding and painting access, but it also creates assembly joints that must be controlled during production.

5. Resin Casting and Degassing

Resin is prepared and cast into the molds. Vacuum degassing may be used where appropriate to reduce avoidable trapped air. Material mixing, mold condition, temperature and casting technique all influence the result.

After curing, the pieces are removed from the molds and checked before the next stage.

6. Trimming, Filling and Surface Preparation

Excess material and visible mold lines are removed. Small surface imperfections may be filled and sanded. This stage is essential because paint does not hide poor surface preparation; it can make defects more visible.

7. Base Coating and Hand Painting

Base colors, spray finishes and hand-painted details are applied according to the approved sample. The balance between spray painting, masking and hand painting depends on the design.

Hand-applied finishing can show controlled minor variation. For this reason, production should be evaluated against approved color references, the approved sample and agreed acceptance limits rather than an unrealistic promise of absolute visual identity.

8. Assembly and Final Inspection

Separate parts, accessories, nameplates or packaging components are assembled. Inspection may cover appearance, color placement, surface condition, stability, part fit and visible glue or joint lines.

The inspection plan should reflect the actual product. A freestanding figurine requires stability checks, while a magnet requires backing and holding checks, and a snow globe base requires assembly and packing review.

9. Protective Packing

The finished product is packed according to its weight, projecting details, surface sensitivity and retail presentation. Fragile parts should not be protected by a decorative box alone; the inner structure must hold the product in the correct position.

2. How Should Buyers Choose the Right Polyresin Process?

The word “polyresin” describes the material category, not one fixed product quality. Buyers still need to make several process decisions.

Digital 3D Development or Hand Sculpting

Digital 3D development is useful when dimensions, symmetry, repeated geometry or controlled revisions are important. Hand sculpting may suit organic textures or a specific artistic approach. Some projects use both methods.

The right question is not which method is universally better, but which method gives the project an approvable master model with the required form and detail.

One-piece or Multi-part Construction

A one-piece design can reduce assembly, but it may be difficult to mold or paint if the pose contains deep undercuts. A multi-part design can improve production access, but connection points must be planned carefully.

Realistic or Stylized Finish

Realistic products usually require more reference detail, controlled facial painting and subtle color transitions. Stylized products may use simplified forms and clearer color blocks. The required style should be confirmed before sculpting, not after the first finished sample.

Matte, Gloss, Antique or Special Surface Effects

Surface finish changes the appearance and can affect how small defects are perceived. Matte, semi-gloss, gloss, metallic, antique, stone-like or other effects should be sampled when they are important to the design.

Hollow, Solid or Weighted Structure

Product weight affects material use, shipping cost, stability and perceived value. The structure should be reviewed according to product size, base footprint and intended presentation instead of assuming that heavier is always better.

3. What Information Is Needed Before Quotation?

An accurate quotation requires more than a reference picture. Buyers should provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • product type and intended use;
  • front, side and detail references;
  • required size or approximate dimensions;
  • estimated quantity per design;
  • number of designs or SKUs;
  • preferred pose, expression and viewing angle;
  • base, nameplate or inscription requirements;
  • separate parts or functional components;
  • target market and intended user;
  • required finish and painting direction;
  • packaging format;
  • testing or compliance requirements;
  • required delivery date and destination.

If some information has not been decided, it is better to state “not sure” than to leave a hidden assumption. We can then identify which decisions must be made before pricing and which can remain open until sampling.

4. How Long Does a Custom Polyresin Project Take?

For polyresin projects, the sample stage commonly includes model development, master review, mold preparation, casting, surface preparation and painting. Based on our current internal project references, a standard sample may take approximately 7–12 working days after the required artwork and modeling direction are confirmed. Complex sculptures, multiple revisions or detailed hand painting may require longer.

Mass-production timing is confirmed separately because it depends on:

  • product size and number of cast parts;
  • number of designs;
  • painting complexity;
  • order quantity;
  • packaging development;
  • testing requirements;
  • sample approval speed;
  • current production schedule.

The production period should start only after the final sample, order specification and commercial terms have been approved. Shipping time is not the same as manufacturing time and must be added according to the selected transport method and destination.

For seasonal or event-driven projects, buyers should provide the required arrival date rather than only a preferred factory completion date. This allows sampling, production, inspection, packing, transport and schedule buffer to be planned together.

5. How Are Polyresin Products Packed to Reduce Damage Risk?

Polyresin can reproduce fine dimensional detail, but thin accessories and projecting parts can be vulnerable in transit. Packaging should be designed around the actual product rather than copied from another figurine.

A typical protection plan may include:

  1. surface protection to reduce rubbing or paint transfer;
  2. a fitted inner tray or supporting insert;
  3. clearance around hands, wings, tools, crowns or other projections;
  4. an individual inner box when required;
  5. an appropriately specified outer carton;
  6. moisture protection or desiccant where the project requires it;
  7. carton labeling and packing-quantity control.

Retail packaging and transport packaging perform different jobs. A gift box may present the product well but still require a protective insert and suitable shipping carton.

Any required drop, vibration, retail or marketplace packaging test should be stated before quotation. A test performed on one product or packing configuration does not automatically apply to a different design.

6. Can Polyresin Products Be Combined with Other Materials?

Yes. Polyresin products can be developed as part of a coordinated collection with soft PVC magnets, keychains, metal badges, coins, bottle openers and other souvenir items.

The products may share a theme, color direction, branding system and retail packaging while using the material best suited to each format. For example, a sculpted polyresin character can be paired with a soft PVC keychain and a metal pin rather than forcing one material to serve every function.

When production schedules, packing requirements and shipping arrangements are compatible, different products may also be consolidated into one shipment. This can reduce duplicate freight and handling costs, but savings are not automatic. Carton volume, weight, completion dates, customs requirements and delivery priorities must be reviewed for the full collection.

7. Are Polyresin Materials Compliant and Environmentally Certified?

Compliance must be assessed by product, submitted material, intended user and destination market. A material or test report should not be described as universal approval for every finished product.

Before quotation, buyers should identify:

  • destination country or region;
  • whether the product is decorative, collectible, promotional or intended for children;
  • restricted-substance requirements;
  • coating or paint requirements;
  • retailer or brand testing protocols;
  • packaging and labeling requirements.

Environmental decisions should also be specific. Packaging reduction, paper-based alternatives and efficient carton planning may be considered where suitable, but claims such as “fully eco-friendly,” “biodegradable resin” or “globally certified” should only be used when supported by the exact material and documentation for the project.

8. Pricing, MOQ and Supply Flexibility

For new polyresin SKUs, TUOYUAN can support small-batch trial orders of approximately 200–500 pieces per design, subject to the product size, structure, finish and packaging. This range helps buyers test a new design before increasing volume.

The MOQ is not the only cost driver. Polyresin pricing is influenced by:

  • sculpture or 3D development requirements;
  • master model and mold complexity;
  • product dimensions and weight;
  • number of cast and assembled parts;
  • painting steps and color complexity;
  • surface finish;
  • inspection requirements;
  • individual and retail packaging;
  • quantity per design.

Tooling, sample charges and unit prices should be separated in the quotation so the cost structure can be reviewed clearly. If the design, size, quantity, finish, packaging or test scope changes, the quotation may need to be recalculated.

For repeat orders, preserved tooling and an approved reference sample may reduce development work. Reorder pricing and lead time still need confirmation because raw-material cost, packaging, specification and production conditions may change.

Payment terms are confirmed according to the project, order value and commercial agreement.

A Practical Polyresin RFQ Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, confirm or provide:

  • artwork or reference images;
  • intended product size;
  • estimated quantity and number of designs;
  • target market and intended user;
  • required pose, base and accessories;
  • paint and finish direction;
  • packaging expectations;
  • compliance or testing requirements;
  • requested arrival date and destination;
  • NDA requirement for confidential artwork.

The more clearly these items are defined, the easier it is to compare quotations on the same basis and avoid preventable changes during sampling.

Start with the Product Requirement, Not Only the Material

Polyresin is valuable when a project needs dimensional form, sculpted storytelling and controlled hand finishing. It is not automatically the best material for every souvenir format. A successful project begins by matching the product’s shape, function, presentation, quantity and target market with an appropriate construction and approval process.
