Custom Metal Products: A Buyer’s Guide

Custom metal is used for badges, lapel pins, commemorative coins, keychains, bottle openers, magnets and branded accessories. Metal can create fine lines, weight, reflective finishes and durable functional parts, but “metal” is not a single process.

A stamped badge, a die-cast keychain and a functional bottle opener require different tooling and production decisions. This guide helps buyers choose a suitable route and prepare the information needed for an accurate quotation.

1. How Custom Metal Products Are Made

Not every metal product follows every process below. Forming methods are alternatives selected for the design.

1. Artwork and technical review

We review the artwork, dimensions, thickness, relief, edge shape, colors, plating, back design, attachment, function and packaging. Very fine lines, narrow enamel areas and small text may need adjustment for stable production.

2. Material and manufacturing route selection

The base metal and forming method are selected according to shape, detail, weight, function, target finish and budget. Options may include zinc-alloy die casting, stamping, machining, laser cutting or a combination of processes.

These processes are not sequential steps that every product receives. For example, stamping may suit a relatively flat badge, while die casting may suit deeper relief or a more complex outline.

3. Production drawing and tooling

A technical drawing defines dimensions, relief, recesses, holes, attachment positions and front/back details. After approval, the required die, mold or fixture is prepared.

4. Forming and cutting

The part is cast, stamped, cut or machined according to the selected route. Openings and functional areas may require additional drilling or machining.

5. Trimming, grinding and polishing

Edges and surfaces are refined before finishing. The level of polishing depends on the desired appearance; a mirror finish and an antique recessed finish require different preparation.

6. Plating and base finish

The metal may receive gold, silver, nickel, black nickel, copper, antique or other approved finishes. Plating appearance can vary with base material, surface preparation and finish specification, so the approved sample is the production reference.

7. Coloring and special effects

Color can be added by enamel-style filling, paint, printing or other selected methods. Transparent color, glitter, epoxy, glow effects or moving structures are optional features that must be evaluated for feasibility and durability.

8. Assembly and functional testing

Pins, clutches, magnets, split rings, chains, opener components or moving parts are assembled. Functional products should be checked for intended operation, not only visual appearance.

9. Inspection and packing

Finished pieces are checked for dimensions, surface defects, plating consistency, color, attachment, function and packing quantity. Protective packaging is then applied to reduce scratching and movement during transit.

2. Choosing the Right Metal Process

Die casting

Often used for zinc-alloy products with deeper relief, complex outlines, open areas or three-dimensional features. It is suitable for many keychains, sculptural badges, magnets and opener bodies.

Stamping

Often suitable for flatter badges, pins, medals and coins where crisp lines and controlled thickness are important. The suitability depends on material, design depth and edge structure.

Machining and laser processes

These can support precise cutting, engraving, openings or selected structural details. They may be used alone or with another forming method depending on the design.

Coloring options

Choose molded or stamped metal lines with color filling for separated graphic areas. Choose printing when gradients, photographic graphics or very fine details cannot be reproduced economically by filled color alone.

Plating and finish

Bright plating produces a reflective appearance; matte, sandblasted or antique treatments change the contrast and perceived depth. Specify the desired finish rather than using “gold” or “silver” without a visual reference.

Attachments and functions

Confirm whether the item uses a butterfly clutch, safety pin, magnet, key ring, chain, opener mechanism or moving component. Attachment choice influences tooling, thickness, balance, packing and cost.

3. What to Provide Before Requesting a Quote

Please provide:

  • Product type and intended function
  • Vector artwork or high-resolution reference
  • Required dimensions and thickness
  • Preferred base metal, if specified
  • Flat, relief or three-dimensional structure
  • Front and back artwork
  • Plating and surface finish
  • Number and type of colors
  • Attachment, moving part or functional component
  • Quantity per design
  • Individual and retail packaging requirements
  • Destination country and target delivery date
  • Intended users and required test standards
  • Reference sample, if available

If the process is not known, provide the desired visual effect, function and budget position. We can recommend a route and identify the assumptions in the quotation.

4. Sampling and Production Lead Time

For a standard custom badge project, typical internal reference times are:

  • Production drawing: approximately 2–3 days
  • Mold preparation: approximately 5–7 days
  • Sample production: approximately 3–5 days
  • Mass production: approximately 20–34 days after sample approval
  • Final inspection and packing: approximately 2–3 days

The overall standard badge workflow is therefore often approximately 33–48 days, excluding shipping. This timing must not be applied automatically to every metal product.

Complex bottle openers, moving badges, multiple components, special plating, printing, retail packaging, third-party testing, revisions, high quantities and peak-season capacity can require more time. The confirmed schedule is issued after the final design, process, quantity and packaging are known.

5. Packaging That Helps Reduce Damage Risk

Metal products can scratch each other and polished or plated surfaces can show abrasion. Appropriate packaging may include:

  • Individual polybags or protective sleeves
  • Cards that secure pins and attachments
  • Tissue, foam or separators between finished surfaces
  • Trays or inserts for shaped and functional pieces
  • Small boxes for coins, awards or premium sets
  • Inner boxes and export cartons sized to control movement
  • Retail packaging and counter displays when required

Moving parts and opener components may need additional restraint. Packaging should be confirmed with the product structure and transport method. The objective is to reduce damage risk; no packing method can guarantee that transit damage will never occur.

6. Can Metal Products Be Ordered with Other Materials?

Yes. Metal products can be combined with soft PVC, polyresin, magnets, printed cards, straps and custom packaging. Different souvenir categories may also be consolidated when production schedules, packing requirements and shipping arrangements are compatible.

This can reduce duplicate freight and handling costs, but actual savings depend on carton volume, weight, destination and delivery schedule. Mixed-material consolidation should be evaluated during project planning rather than treated as an automatic saving.

7. Compliance and Surface-Finish Requirements

Compliance is determined by product type, material, coating, intended users and destination market. Buyers should state applicable requirements before quotation.

Depending on the project, testing or documentation may relate to restricted substances, lead and cadmium limits, coating composition or requirements such as REACH, RoHS, California Proposition 65 or customer-specific protocols. Not every requirement applies to every product or market.

Existing reports only support the named sample, material and test scope. Project-specific testing must confirm the laboratory, standard, sample, cost and schedule. We do not claim that all metal products are universally compliant or certified without relevant evidence.

8. Pricing, MOQ and Supply Flexibility

Important cost factors include:

  • Base metal and product weight
  • Dimensions and thickness

  • Relief depth and front/back detail
  • Tooling complexity
  • Plating and surface preparation
  • Number and method of colors
  • Printing, epoxy, glitter, glow or other effects
  • Attachments, moving parts and functional components
  • Individual or retail packaging
  • Testing requirements
  • Order quantity and delivery arrangement

Tooling should be identified separately from the unit price when applicable. A repeat order may not require new tooling if the design is unchanged and the existing tool remains suitable, but changes to size, structure or key details may require modification or replacement.

Payment terms are confirmed according to the project, order value and commercial agreement.

A Practical RFQ Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, confirm:

  1. Is the item a badge, coin, keychain, opener, magnet or another product?
  2. What function must it perform?
  3. What are the dimensions and thickness?
  4. Is the design flat, relief or three-dimensional?
  5. What front and back details are required?
  6. Which plating and colors are preferred?
  7. What attachment or moving component is needed?
  8. What quantity is required for each design?
  9. What packaging is expected?
  10. Which destination market and test requirements apply?
  11. What is the target delivery date?

Clear answers allow the supplier to recommend the correct process instead of pricing an unsuitable construction.
