Soft PVC Manufacturing: Process, Artwork Limits and QC
Updated September 27, 2026
Custom soft PVC is not one fixed process. The final keychain, fridge magnet, coaster or luggage tag depends on four groups of decisions: the structure and relief level, the color and printing method, the surface treatment and attachments, and the artwork limits that keep the design manufacturable. Each decision has a quality and cost consequence.
For a buyer, the practical question is not “can you make it in PVC?” but “which structure, which color route, which finish, and what should be checked when the goods arrive?” This guide explains the soft PVC manufacturing process from artwork to inspection, the production parameters that affect the result, and the QC checks that protect your order.

The Process at a Glance
A typical custom soft PVC project moves through nine stages: project and artwork review, production artwork and structure definition, mold or tooling preparation, color matching and material preparation, dispensing and layering, demolding and trimming, surface treatment and printing when required, attachment and assembly, and inspection and packing.
The sections below cover the process options that buyers choose from, the artwork limits that must be respected, and the inspection checks that should be agreed before mass production.
The Manufacturing overview explains how these stages are organized.

1. Structure Options: 2D, Layered, 3D and Double-Sided
The relief structure is the first decision because it changes the mold, the number of production operations and the final feel.
2D flat designs — color areas are separated by shallow dividing lines; the product stays relatively thin. Cost-efficient for logos, text and simple graphics.
Layered relief (2D with raised levels) — selected elements sit higher than the background, creating clear visual hierarchy without a fully sculpted object.
Full 3D forms — characters, mascots and sculptural shapes with volume on several sides; they require more complex modeling, tooling and inspection.
Double-sided construction — a flat back for magnets or printed logos, or molded detail on both sides with the two halves joined at the edge. Double-sided products are common for higher-value keychains and bag charms.
Buyer checkpoint: Confirm whether the design is 2D, layered or full 3D, and what the back must look like — flat, textured, printed or molded. The structure decision affects cost and lead time, and changing it after tooling is expensive.
2. Color and Printing Options
Soft PVC color is achieved by dispensing liquid PVC pigment into the mold cavities, with each color cured in sequence. Four options cover most designs:
| Color or printing route | Best suited to | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| Pantone solid color | Brand logos and standard color blocks | Approve against a physical sample; screen color differs from molded PVC |
| Micro-dispensing | Small separated color areas and fine detail | Very small text and lines still have minimum width limits |
| UV or screen printing | Gradients, photographic art and micro text | Applied on flat surfaces; confirm wear expectations |
| Effect pigments | Glow-in-the-dark, glitter/pearl, fluorescent, translucent | Specify the exact effect; each adds a material and process step |
Glow-in-the-dark pigments absorb light and release it in low light; glitter and pearl powders add shimmer; fluorescent colors appear bright under UV light; translucent or transparent effects create a jelly-like look popular for beverage and summer themes.
Buyer checkpoint: Specify Pantone references and confirm the finish on the actual production material. If the artwork contains gradients, photos or very small text, expect printing to be part of the route rather than molded color separation alone.

3. Surface Treatment: Texture and Anti-Dust Coating
Fresh soft PVC can carry static and feel slightly tacky, attracting dust. A surface treatment step addresses this and defines the final touch.
Anti-dust coating (often called a PU coating or feel oil) — a thin matte protective layer that reduces dust pickup, tackiness, fingerprints and light scratching, giving the product a smooth skin-like touch. It is a common finishing step for higher-quality promotional items.
Surface texturing — the mold can be textured to produce leather, sandblast or fabric-like surfaces where the design needs a specific tactile feel.
Buyer checkpoint: Confirm whether an anti-dust coating is included and what surface touch is expected. Ask how the coating is applied and how it is checked, because an uneven or peeling coating is a common inspection failure.

4. Attachments and Backings
The attachment defines the product’s function and is one of the main cost drivers. Typical options include:
| Product | Common attachments / backings |
|---|---|
| Soft PVC keychain | Metal key ring, lobster clasp, eye screw, braided cord, leather cord |
| Fridge magnet | Encased magnet or flexible magnetic sheet |
| Standee / figurine | PVC base, plug-in or one-piece molded base |
| Coaster / mat | Anti-slip back, single or double-side grip |
| Luggage tag | Strap or buckle plus a transparent card slot |
| Pin / badge | Heat-sealed safety pin, needle pin or magnetic backing |
Buyer checkpoint: Specify the exact attachment, its size and finish, and how it connects to the PVC body. Attachment strength should be part of the inspection plan — a ring or eye screw that pulls out is a critical failure in use.

5. Artwork and Tooling Parameters
Production artwork is prepared from vector files (AI, CDR or PDF). The following limits are typical design guidance and depend on the mold method and product scale:
Molded color lines — separated color lines (raised or recessed) are typically recommended at approximately 0.3–0.5 mm minimum. Finer lines risk overflow or incomplete dispensing.
Molded text — raised or recessed text is typically recommended at approximately 2–3 mm or larger. If the text must be smaller, surface printing is usually the practical route.
Mold material — aluminum molds are commonly used for standard 2D products and mid-volume programs because they are faster and more economical to produce; copper molds offer higher precision, sharper edges and longer life, and are usually considered for high-volume or highly detailed 3D work. The right choice depends on the product, quantity and detail level.
Buyer checkpoint: Provide vector artwork where possible and confirm the smallest lines and text early. The supplier should flag features that will not reproduce cleanly in molded PVC before tooling, not after the first sample.

6. Development Flow and Trial Orders
For a standard project after the necessary information is confirmed, typical internal reference times are:
Production artwork: approximately 1–2 days
Mold and sample: approximately 3–7 days
Mass production: approximately 8–12 days after sample approval
These are planning references, not guaranteed dates. Complex 3D shapes, many colors, special attachments, packaging development, revisions, testing and peak-season capacity may extend the schedule. Shipping time is additional.
TUOYUAN supports small-batch trial orders of approximately 200–500 pieces per design or new SKU for custom soft PVC products, subject to product size, structure, number of colors, tooling, attachments, packaging and production conditions.
Buyer checkpoint: Treat the sample as the approval gate. Confirm structure, color, surface and attachment on a physical sample before releasing mass production.

7. QC Checks and Inspection
Soft PVC products are commonly inspected against referenced AQL levels — for example, critical defects accepted at 0, major defects at 2.5 and minor defects at 4.0. The applicable acceptance levels should be agreed with the supplier before production.
What the inspection covers
| Check area | What is verified |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and thickness | Overall size, layer thickness and outline against the approved drawing |
| Color and separation | Color against Pantone references; separation lines clean without overflow |
| Surface condition | Bubbles, pinholes, contamination, overflow, sinking or uneven areas |
| Touch and coating | Even anti-dust coating, no tackiness, peeling or odor |
| Attachments and function | Ring, eye screw, magnet and clasp retention; pull and closure force |
| Packing and labeling | Non-stick packing, correct marks, carton quantity |
Common defect levels
Critical (acceptable at 0): attachments that pull out easily, strong chemical odor or material non-compliance, wrong logo or text, severe tearing or breakage.
Major (acceptable at 2.5): visible overflow or mixed colors, exposed base color or missing fill, obvious bubbles, contamination in light colors, clear color deviation, missing or peeling coating, delamination of double-sided products.
Minor (acceptable at 4.0): slight overflow or flashing, small back-surface marks, tiny contamination points, light transport scratches on hardware.
Practical field checks a buyer can request
Visual check — under standard daylight, inspect the front from about 30 cm; defects visible within seconds are treated as major.
Pull test — randomly pull rings, eye screws or straps by hand to confirm molded-in attachment retention.
Bend and twist check — bend a sample to confirm the paint or coating layer does not crack or separate.
Wipe test — wipe the surface repeatedly with a damp cloth or alcohol wipe to check coating and print adhesion.
Buyer checkpoint: Agree the inspection standard, check level and field-test method before mass production. A product is not ready to ship until the approved sample, color reference and packaging standard are all confirmed.

FAQ
What is the difference between 2D, layered and 3D soft PVC?
2D designs use flat color areas separated by shallow lines. Layered designs raise selected elements above the background for visual hierarchy. Full 3D forms have volume on several sides and require more complex modeling, tooling and inspection. The choice depends on the design and intended use.
Can fine lines and small text be reproduced in soft PVC?
Molded color lines are typically recommended at approximately 0.3–0.5 mm minimum, and molded text at approximately 2–3 mm or larger. Finer details are usually reproduced by surface printing instead of molded color separation.
Why does my soft PVC sample look different from the screen?
Molded PVC color is affected by lighting, surface finish and material characteristics. Pantone references are a starting point; the physical sample is the final approval reference.
What is the anti-dust coating on soft PVC products?
It is a thin protective surface layer that reduces static dust pickup, tackiness, fingerprints and light scratching, giving a smooth skin-like touch. It is a common finishing step for higher-quality promotional items.
What should I check when inspecting soft PVC products?
Check dimensions, color and separation, surface condition, coating, attachment retention and packing quantity. Common field checks include a visual check under standard light, a pull test on rings and eye screws, a bend test on the coating, and a wipe test for print and coating adhesion.
What is the typical development time for a custom soft PVC product?
As internal planning references, production artwork takes approximately 1–2 days, mold and sample 3–7 days, and mass production approximately 8–12 days after sample approval. Complex designs and peak-season capacity may extend the schedule.
What is the minimum order quantity for soft PVC products?
TUOYUAN supports small-batch trial orders of approximately 200–500 pieces per design or new SKU, subject to product size, structure, number of colors, tooling, attachments, packaging and production conditions.
